Why glass

Glass wins at the bar, in the dish room, and on the receipt

Since July 3, 2021, the Single-Use Plastics Directive has removed plastic straws from European hospitality. The market scrambled for a replacement and reached for paper and metal. Today, after thousands of bar shifts, it's clear that glass is the answer the industry actually needed: reusable, fully hygienic, and beautiful on camera.

Every glass straw replaces more than a thousand plastic ones. That's not an abstract number: plastic straws have for years been among the ten most commonly collected items on European beaches, and the microplastic from their breakdown ends up in the stomachs of whales, turtles, and seabirds. A single bar that switches to glass takes dozens of kilograms of plastic out of circulation every year.

One straw instead of a thousandIn normal use, our straw returns to the bar hundreds of times. Instead of box after box of disposables, you make one purchase that works season after season.
Hygiene you can seeClear glass hides nothing. Bartenders and sanitary inspectors judge cleanliness at a glance, without peering into a dark tube.
No taste of its own, full flavour of the drinkSoda-lime glass is chemically inert. It doesn't take away citrus notes, leaves no aftertaste and doesn't absorb odours from the previous cocktail.
A look that sellsA drink with a glass straw looks better on camera. Guests take photos, the cocktail menu gains appeal, and the venue looks polished down to every detail.
A clean environmental recordGlass can be recycled endlessly without loss of quality. It does not break down into microplastics, does not end up in the stomachs of whales and turtles, and is not left on the beach after the season.

Glass, paper, metal — an honest comparison

We tested all three materials under real bar conditions: hot drinks, iced cocktails, a commercial dishwasher, twelve hours of service.

Soda-lime glass

Our pick

It doesn't absorb flavor or odor, and doesn't react with alcohol, citrus, or syrups. You can see straight through it that it's clean, and guests see the drink's color along its full length. It withstands hundreds of cycles in a commercial dishwasher.

  • Flavor-neutral, even after an hour in the drink
  • Hygiene checks by sight, not guesswork
  • A premium look that sells the cocktail
  • Unit cost drops with every wash
Paper

Goes soggy in minutes

A paper straw goes soft before the guest finishes the drink, bends on the first firm sip, and leaves a cardboard aftertaste in a fruit cocktail. It's single-use, so you buy it endlessly, and every order means another delivery and another bag of waste.

  • Falls apart in the drink, comes back to the guest as a complaint
  • A noticeable taste and smell of paper
  • Not suitable for drinks with ice
  • A recurring cost, forever
Metal

You can't see what's inside

A steel straw is opaque, so residue and leftover sugar stay hidden inside it. Cheaper alloys develop a film and rust at the weld points, impart a metallic aftertaste, and conduct temperature: they burn with hot drinks and stick to the lip with ice.

  • The inside can't be checked by eye
  • Tarnish and rust on cheaper alloys
  • Metallic aftertaste in delicate cocktails
  • Burns or freezes, depending on the drink
