Washing glass straws in a commercial dishwasher
July 9, 2026 · 5 min read
The durability of a glass straw depends 90% on how it makes its way from service back to the dish room. Below is the procedure that keeps our clients' losses under three percent a year.
Collecting from tables
Most breakage happens in the bus tub, where the straw ends up wedged between glasses and plates. A separate, narrow container for straws at the waiter's station is enough — a plastic one, with water, so sugar residue doesn't dry out and stick.
Dishwasher
A standard cycle up to 65 °C, using a glass rack or a dedicated straw insert angled so water flows through the bore of the straw. Straws shouldn't touch each other or lie loose at the bottom of the rack. Soda-lime glass doesn't tolerate sudden temperature changes well — let straws fresh out of a hot dishwasher cool for a moment before they go into ice.
Hand washing
We don't include brushes with wholesale packs — washing in a commercial dishwasher is enough. If you still prefer to wash by hand, a brush is a small purchase. The brush runs the full length of the tube; wash it under running water with dish detergent. After rinsing, just hold the tube up to the light — the clarity of the glass is the simplest cleanliness test there is.
A straw you can see light through, with no haze or residue, is clean. With metal, you simply don't have that information.
Syrup residue
For drinks with thick syrups and fruit purée, it's worth doing a weekly soak in warm water with a scale and residue remover made for glass. Fifteen minutes is enough for the residue to come off without scrubbing.
Inspection and replacement
Once a month we inspect the stock and reject any pieces with a chipped edge. We add a 2–3% buffer to orders specifically for this rotation. For larger orders, that buffer is already built into the unit price.
Quick reference for the dish room
- A separate water container for straws at the waitstaff station.
- Straw insert, cycle up to 65 °C, pieces not touching.
- A brush for hand-washing, checked against the light.
- A descaling bath once a week if you serve drinks with syrups.
